Age Divisions Overview

At Escondido Pop Warner (EPW), our football programs are organized into age-based divisions to ensure each participant enjoys a safe, fun, and developmentally appropriate experience. Grouping players by age allows coaches to tailor practices and games to the skill levels and physical maturity of each division.

Flag Football is designed for ages 5 to 7, focusing on introducing the fundamentals of football in a non-contact environment. Players learn basic rules, teamwork, and essential skills in a supportive setting.

Tackle Football is offered for ages 8 to 13, where athletes build on those fundamentals with increased complexity and physical play. Each tackle division emphasizes skill development, sportsmanship, and leadership, preparing players for higher levels of competition.

Flag Football

For ages 5, 6 & 7; no weight limit

The EPW Flag Division is a great starting point for young athletes ages 5 to 7 to learn and enjoy the game of football. This non-contact division focuses on developing fundamental skills, understanding basic rules, and encouraging teamwork—all in a fun and structured environment.

The EPW 8U Tackle Division is where young athletes take their first step into full-contact football in a safe, inclusive, and development-driven environment. This division focuses on building core skills, teamwork, and confidence while introducing key aspects of the game—including special teams and structured game play. Age-specific rules ensure players learn the game at a comfortable pace, with coaches emphasizing discipline, sportsmanship, and fun. Scores are kept, and teams have exciting opportunities to advance to the Wescon Regional Championships and participate in additional invitational events, creating memorable experiences both on and off the field.

For ages 7, 8 & 9; no weight limit

The EPW 9U Tackle Division is tailored for young athletes ages 7 to 9 who are ready to grow in the game of football. This division emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of game strategy in a safe and structured setting. Players continue to build on fundamental techniques while learning advanced positions, formations, and special teams play. The 9U experience promotes confidence, discipline, and camaraderie. Teams also have the opportunity to compete in the Wescon Regional Championships and take part in invitational events during the season.

The EPW 10U Tackle Division is designed for athletes ages 8 to 10 who are building on prior football experience and ready to deepen their skills. This level introduces more advanced play concepts, including expanded playbooks, position-specific development, and situational awareness. With full special teams and age-appropriate rules, players grow in technique, teamwork, and football IQ. The division fosters a supportive environment that encourages leadership and personal growth. Teams may qualify for the Wescon Regional Championships and participate in additional invitational events throughout the season.

The EPW 11U Tackle Division offers a competitive and skill-building experience for athletes ages 9 to 11. This level focuses on refining advanced techniques, strategic game play, and leadership development both on and off the field. Players are challenged with complex playbooks and increased responsibilities, including special teams roles. The division promotes teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship within a supportive environment. Teams also have the chance to compete in the Wescon Regional Championships and participate in additional invitational events throughout the season.
